This blockade led to arrests and led Don Getty, then Premier of Alberta, to provide land to the Lubicon as part of the Grimshaw Agreement. The agreement was never reached, but the large-scale land is then the land defined in the current agreement. In budget 2017, $352.1 million was allocated to support basic infrastructure and cultural and recreational facilities across the country, as well as community building for the Lubicon Lake Band Community. The construction is part of a new transaction agreement signed in October 2018 with the group and the governments of Canada and Alberta. Under this regime, the Lubicon Lake Band finally obtains the land and contractual benefits to which they are entitled under Contract 8. The subdivision was approved by members of the Lubicon Lake Band in a municipal vote held between September 14 and October 15, 2018. This is a historic opportunity for members of the Lubicon Lake Band, for Alberta and for Canada as a whole. “It took generations for a great historical injustice to be properly committed and for the families of the Lubicon Lake Band to begin to build a better future on their own land. This agreement shows how resilient and strong this Community is already.
We look forward to building an even stronger relationship based on respect, cooperation and reconciliation. Rachel Notley, Prime Minister, “The agreement we have reached today will change this reality for so many people. The agreement provides for more than 95 square miles of land allocation for the Lubicon Lake Band and $95 million in financial compensation from Canada. In addition, Alberta provides US$18 million. The agreement will also cover infrastructure such as roads, housing, procurement services, the internet and a school. The Lubicon Lake Band, the Government of Alberta and the Government of Canada signed the treaties on social benefits and land rights after members of the Community voted overwhelmingly in favour of the colony. This historic agreement will take place in a decades-long campaign and contribute to improving the quality of life for members of the Lubicon Lake Band. “Today, we are taking a historic step towards renewal and reconciliation with the Lubicon Lake Band and marking a new beginning with the community. The settlement we negotiated together delivers on the treaty promises.
